And, the money you save is one of the most useful things you can have in the event of an emergency. Budget your money. Part 3 : Take It Back, Use It Up, or Pass It On

Home cluttered with items that are never used? (Clutter can cost you.) Why not become empowered and take back your space, all while earning a little bit of money or bringing some joy to the world. Who knew that excess stuff could make such a difference? With the rare exception of a practicing minimalist, we all have things in our homes that are not being used. We probably also have some brand new things still in the original packaging or with the original tags attached. In the previous two articles in this series, I talked about how we can earn … Continue reading

Turn off the Television to Get Out of Debt

Did you know that simply turning off the television, or watching less of it can lead to more savings? I’m not just talking about the savings you will get from foregoing the $200 cable bill or the electricity it takes to run your television. I’m talking about the other hidden benefits, the secret savings that will kick in. Less Need to Buy Where do we usually find out about things that we absolutely need to have (although we never knew about them before)? Why the television, of course. It is still the number one way that we get our advertising. … Continue reading

Instant Gratification

We live in a society of instant gratification. We have fast food, instant messaging, we can go through a drive-through for our banking—we have forgotten what it means to wait. Credit cards have taken the concept of waiting and turned it into something foreign. Why wait for something we want? All we have to do is swipe the card and the thing we want is ours. But this kind of mindset is detrimental in so many ways. First off, when we forget how to wait, we forget to be grateful. When everything we want is just handed to us without … Continue reading

Teaching Children Financial Literacy

It is only natural for parents to want their children to have an easier time of things when they become adults than they themselves have had. No parent wants his or her child to grow up, become independent, and then struggle financially. Fortunately, parents are in a position to teach children the fundamentals of finance so that they have a better chance of having that easier time that their parents wish for them. Financial literacy is not something that was taught in school when I was a student, at least not in much depth. In a class called “Personal and … Continue reading

Rent Your Children for Extra Cash

This gets listed under one of those “Why didn’t I think of that?” ideas. It is such as simple idea, and yet it can make you some easy money. Making ends meet can be pretty tough right now, and our kids tend to add to the burden with all of those extra expenses. Besides food, clothing and medical cares, there are toys, activities, school fees, etc. It really adds up. Kids really make you spend. Everyone should be involved in frugal living in a family, and that includes children as well. If everyone is on board with saving money and … Continue reading

There are HOW Many Kinds of Cloth Diapers?

After my husband and I made the decision to use cloth diapers, we undertook the daunting task of deciding which kind to use. The only kind of cloth diaper I’d ever seen or heard about were the good ol’ prefolds, fastened with diaper pins, and covered with plastic pants. I was ready to take on the task of rinsing poopy diapers in the toilet, learning how to pin without poking my baby, and wiping down the plastic pants with a washcloth, so they could be worn through multiple messes. There’s no doubt about it cloth diapering with prefolds is cheap. … Continue reading

Homeschool Lessons from Real Life: Recession

One of my most favorite about homeschooling is that you can tailor lessons to coincide with real life. With our country currently feeling the financial squeeze of recession, and possibly a depression, what could be a better time to teach lessons on the economy? Whether you do unit studies, more classical regimented studies, or unschool with subtle steering, here are some ideas you can use to teach your child about the recession. Read books about previous depressions and recessions. More specifically, get books about the great depression of the 1930’s. There are novels and first account stories and biographies for … Continue reading

Sometimes Odd But New Uses for Old Stuff

There is a certain addiction in our household. I can almost say it is a competition sometimes. We all enjoy discovering new uses for items that are used for something else entirely. The stranger the use the better, though we all agree it must be practical too. I have written articles about lots of the things we reuse often, however I plan to write some new ones too. In honor of the new articles that are coming, I thought I would recap my favorite reusable items. A Clever and Very Frugal Way to Use Torn Panty Hose I am completely … Continue reading
