Using your Library

No matter where you live, there is a valuable resource in your neighborhood. It is known as the library. Why not take advantage of this vital community center; you certainly pay for it out of your taxes already. To be honest, not using your library is a bit like throwing money away.

In almost every county, state and city these days... libraries are changing. There are almost unlimited reasons to check one out today.

*Internet The web has opened the door for easier access to library services as well as new resources within the library itself. No more card catalogs, almost every library now utilizes computers to categorize their materials. This often means you can virtually check your library's database from home or work, place books on hold, and perform almost unlimited research. With many library memberships, there is also the opportunity for access to web-based research tools that normally cost a fee to view.

*Kids For a family, the library is basically prepaid entertainment. It might be story time, a puppet show, reading programs, or at the very least a 3 week free rental for the latest Barney video, either way it is an instant cure for childhood boredom.

*Classes Most libraries offer a variety of free workshops or classes. Often they provide basic computer skills, introductions to the Internet, and in some communities you will find specialty subjects like bilingual studies.

*Social From book groups to study sessions, the library can offer a place to meet others with similar interests.

*Media Outlet Why pay for magazines and newspapers? Simply take a coffee break at your library and read up for free.

*Technology Did your computer crash over the weekend and you were awaiting an important email? Go visit your library. With free Internet access, libraries are a great place to check in. They are also useful for traveling email checks and a great escape for the work-at-home employee.

*Reference Librarians love to research. Have an important dilemma or difficult question to solve? Put your local librarian to the test. She or he will love the challenge and you can put your tax dollars to work for you. Let them do some of the drudgery!

Good money sense is about using the resources you already pay for. The dollars come out of your check each month anyway, so why not make the most of them?
