My Three Favorite Finance Websites

The internet can be a great source for information about financial matters, if you know where to look. Whether you are looking for ways to save more and spend less or you need advice on a particular topic such as retirement planning or business finance you can find the information you need online. Choosing a finance themed blog or two to read on a regular basis can be a great way to boost your financial literacy, too. Here are a few resources that I have found helpful for various financial topics: Kiplinger’s Personal Finance – A very well established personal … Continue reading

The A B C’s of Finance Part 7

As I bring my alphabetical adventures in financial literacy to an end, I am seriously wondering whether there are actually financial words that begin with x, y, and z. Lo and behold, there are. Not many, mind you, but the fact that there are financial terms beginning with those letters is surprising given how few words in general begin with those letters. For X, there are no actual words that I could find, but it is used as a symbol on the Nasdaq stock exchange. If a Nasdaq stock symbol has X as the fifth letter, that means that the … Continue reading

The A B C’s of Finance Part 6

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the alphabet in our quest for financial knowledge. Just a few more letters to go and we will have increased the number of financial terms that we know by twenty six. That’s pretty exciting stuff, and hopefully it is useful stuff too. If you are considering life insurance, you may want to ask your insurance company if they offer universal life insurance, a form of permanent insurance which offers flexible premiums and a flexible death benefit. Universal life insurance also guarantees that your tax-deferred cash value account will … Continue reading

The A B C’s of Money – Part 2

In an effort to increase my financial literacy, I have been educating myself about more words that are used in financial matters. While my personal finances involve the same terms over and over again, I feel that it is important to understand as much as I can about how money works so that I can make the best financial decisions possible. Here are a few more words from the world of finance. A deductible is the amount of money that you must pay out of pocket before your medical insurance, car insurance, or other type of insurance begins to cover … Continue reading

Statistics for the Gulf Oil Spill

The other day, I noted that most of the Hollywood elite are ignoring the oil spill in the Gulf. Anderson, Aaron Dale Burkeen, Donald Clark, Stephen Ray Curtis, Roy Wyatt Kemp, Karl D. Kleppinger Jr., Gordon L. Jones, Keith Blair Manuel, Dewey A. Revette, Shane M. Roshto, and Adam Weise. All but three were fathers. (USA Today) How much oil is leaking each day? … Continue reading

Finances, Work and Marriage

Who is the main financial planner in your marriage? Is it you or your spouse? According to Nancy Gibbs in her article What Women Want Now, 65% of women cite themselves as being the family’s main financial planner. 71% labeled themselves the ’family accountant.’ Mediamark Research and Intelligence tends to back up those claims saying women in the make 75% of the buying decision in home in the USA. I wonder is it any different in Australia or the U.K. Anyone care to comment? Despite the recession and economic downturn many women have more control over money than ever before. … Continue reading

Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics Are Frugal

Hosting the Summer Olympics is an enormous feat that takes billions of dollars to orchestrate. Think about all of the things that must be built, from new venues, to housing, to television and media towers, to the medals themselves. But Beijing Olympics officials vowed from the very beginning to keep everything as frugal as possible for this Summer Olympics. The Beijing Organizing Committee of the 29th Olympic Games (BOCOG) wanted to make sure that there was a balance of income and expenditure, with maybe even a little profit. How can they do this? One of the big expenses for a … Continue reading

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Campaign Finance

Subtitle: Broken System or Broken People? McCain remains committed to the public funding for campaign finance. Most voters would like to do away with it. Obama did away with it. McCain can’t do away with it legally. Obama broke a promise. And I’m still not sure if the system is really broken. Obama’s decision to eliminate public campaign finance was historic. No major party candidate has ever done that before. While his people and McCain’s people supposedly sat down to hammer out an agreement, one of Obama’s lawyers said it was clear, they would not be able to come to … Continue reading
