Sell Your Wedding Dress

The wedding season is hot upon us. Modern couples want to enjoy not only the trappings of a traditional wedding, but also a deep-seated sense of frugality where they can save money. How can you do both of these things? Consider selling your wedding dress after your wedding and recouping some of the money you spent on the dress and affording another bride an opportunity to enjoy similar fashion for less the cost. Decide Ahead of Time It’s important to make the decision to sell your wedding dress before you actually get married. I wouldn’t have sold my wedding dress, … Continue reading

Junior Bloggers at Families.com

This series started last week with me talking about how to apply to Families.com to become a blogger for them. This week I have been covering what happens once you actually get hired. And today, I wanted to talk about being a Junior Blogger. When you’re a junior blogger, it’s all rather nerve-wracking. You are reading the Handbook every day, trying to find the answers to your questions, you are pestering Lisa for the answers you can’t find, and you’re feeling just a little bit stupid. Don’t worry, this too will pass. Not the stupid part if you’re anything like … Continue reading

Irish Sayings, Phrases, Prayers, and Curses

It has been said that the Irish have a way with words. If you have Irish heritage then you probably grew up hearing certain phrases, sayings, or even curses, that came from the mouths of your Irish relatives. Here are a few that you might recognize. Last year, I went to my sister’s wedding and was able to visit with family members that I had not seen for years. Two of my Irish great-aunts spent some time talking with my husband, whom they had not met before. He said that some of the turns of phrase they used made him … Continue reading

Another Take on Gold

We keep hearing people talk about gold. I had a question to pose to my friend, financial advisor John Hauserman of RetirementQuest. I asked, “I keep seeing people advise us to buy gold, but I have a question. What if I end up with all kinds of gold, but there’s nothing to spend it on? What if no one will take my gold? What other ways do you advise us to prepare for future economic downturns?” John replied, “I am really glad you asked this question. While someone could write an entire book on this subject, which I actually did … Continue reading

What Wealthy People Do

I have always admired wealthy people. While I do not personally know many of them, I am always inspired when I learn about the ways that people that are wealthy acquire and keep their fortunes. Today, I learned some very interesting things about millionaires. While the constant media coverage of Hollywood divorces may cause us to associate being rich and famous with being doomed to marital failure, many wealthy people marry only once. It is uncertain exactly how much of an influence this has had on these couples’ ability to be wealthy, but it can’t hurt – divorce can be … Continue reading

Cutting The Family’s Entertainment Budget May Not Hurt Much

With the rising cost of gasoline and other items, family budgets are becoming tighter than ever. When families feel the pinch of a tough economy, they often have to reevaluate where their money goes. Often, the family entertainment budget is the first thing targeted for trimming. If you are in a position where you are considering making cuts to your family’s entertainment budget, do not despair. You can still have plenty of fun while spending less money on entertainment. One way to approach making changes to the family’s entertainment budget is to enlist the help of everyone in the family. … Continue reading

Do You Bundle?

Today, I came across an interesting personal finance website. Bundle.com is a site where you can see how you spend your money in a visual format. On the site, you can track all of the things that you do with money from bank accounts to credit cards and investments. The program categorizes your spending and creates graphs and charts so that you can see your finances in visual form. Also, Bundle tracks the spending habits of many people all over the world. You can see what other people in your local area are spending and what they are spending their … Continue reading

Rising Gas Prices Are Putting The Squeeze on Family Budgets

Yesterday, I saw a news story about the rising cost of gasoline. The reporter mentioned that it is entirely possible that we will see gas prices rise as high as six dollars a gallon by the end of this year. I’ve already been feeling the pinch at the pump for a while now, because the amount of money that I have budgeted for gas does not go as far as it used to, even with my rather fuel-efficient Toyota Echo. As the price of gas continues to rise, my family and many others may have to make some big changes … Continue reading
