Start Donating Young

To get your kids in the giving spirit, start teaching them to donate at a young age. Kids naturally want it all for themselves, so by teaching them to give to those in need – they also learn a valuable life lesson. The first step is to find a charity or cause that holds special meaning for your child. Who they give to and how much they give isn’t as important as finding value in the process. If your daughter loves animals, consider donating to the local Humane Society. If your son wants to be a firefighter, donate to your … Continue reading

Month in Review: Adoption Blog, December 2007

I began the month with a book review that tied in to my November series on coping with discrimination and racism. The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate is based on an inspiring true story of how a town in Montana came together when Jewish and African-American families were terrorized. Then I ran Part One and Part Two Part Two of Is It Okay to Be Choosy? regarding the comments adopting parents often get that if they “really wanted to help”, they’d choose the most needy child or the one with the most special needs–and sometimes we lay this … Continue reading

Giving Time

One of the most virtuous things that you can teach your children is how to give of themselves to those that are less fortunate. Teaching them how to do this will help them not to focus on themselves only. Volunteering and other acts of kindness will help them to learn many other wonderful and humble traits, such as being patient. Volunteering our time was commonplace in our house. With deliberation I made sure that we had a new project each year to do something nice for someone less fortunate. Some of our projects included raising money for the local animal … Continue reading

Service Projects for Kids Who Love Animals

If your child loves animals and would like a volunteer project, where do you start? Of course, there is fundraising. Animal shelters and conservation organizations are always in need of money. Instead of simply collecting or donating money for the organization, your child could make something that is connected. Perhaps he can paint beautifully and could sell hand-painted dog bowls. Perhaps she loves to bead and would like to create beaded leashes or hand-beaded turtles for backpacks. This is an opportunity to create a small business and to raise money for a worth-while organization. Another way to fundraise is to … Continue reading

Money is a huge part of our society, and it always amazes me how kids can no clue how much of the system works. For a young child the best way to teach about money, its uses as well as your own values concerning it is through example. If you go out … Continue reading

Stars Giving Big

Drew Barrymore knows how to give from the heart… or at least from the bottom of her bank account. If you watched yesterday’s “Oprah Winfrey Show” then you know what I’m referring to. The 33-year-old actress shocked Oprah and the entire studio audience (not to mention a few million people watching at home) when she whipped out a check and announced that she was donating $1 million to the World Food Programme to help feed children in Africa. “I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child’s life,” … Continue reading

Are you Christmas shopping already? I personally love to go in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But I am sure that my mother in law is probably almost finished and she is buying for 22 people! I must warn you before you continue reading that I’m not going to disclose to you the hottest “it” toys of the season. Nor will I tell you what cute thing you should buy.
