One of the more difficult things to do when you are budgeting is finding areas to scale back on. While a stranger may be able to look at your budget and easily say to cut unnecessary expenses. You may feel that those expenses are necessary for your life. It helps if you can step back and put things in perspective. Also the situation you are currently in can really affect how much you need to cut out completely. If you are in a large amount of debt, and have trouble meeting the payments and buying groceries, you are in a different situation then someone with a couple thousand of dollars of debt.

Once you have estimated your budget, and you may discover you need to cut back on your spending. It is helpful to realize how much money you need to stop spending in order to survive and get out of debt. As you look at your budget you need to be able to divide your spending into necessities and luxuries. Necessities are meeting your basic payments, feeding your family, and keeping your lights on. Necessities may also include daycare (if you work), health insurance, car insurance and other basics.

All of the other things that you spend money on, really are luxuries. Cable or satellite TV is a luxury. The Internet can be considered a luxury. Netflix, eating out, going to the movies, spending money and clothing (you can find clothing for very low prices for young children) can be considered luxury items.

After you have divided your budget into the categories, you can decide which luxuries you can live without. If you feel that you must keep your luxuries, see if you can reduce the amount you spend on each thing. You can limit eating out to once or twice a month. It is easy to cut back the cable or Internet package. Can you get by with fewer minutes on your cell phone plan? Is there a way to spend less on clothes each month? You may also be able to save on the necessities by shopping around for less expensive insurance and other services.

Often if you strip yourself down to no luxuries, you will find yourself rebelling against the budget and you are setting yourself up for failure. If you simply cut back to a level that is more affordable, you can often find the extra money that you need to change your budget. Scaling back may be easier than you think.
