Save on Cooling Costs

by Debbie Vasen | More from this Blogger

While this spring has been more winter-like in most of the country, eventually the hot weather will hit us. Will you be ready? The cost of electricity is rising along with everything else, so finding ways to keep cool and cut costs will be critical this summer.

The following is a list of less expensive ways to cool down and some cost cutting measures as well. Please feel free to add any of your own in the comment box below!

1. If you do use an air conditioner in your home, try to keep it turned to 78 degrees during the day and off at night. If 78 degrees is still too uncomfortable, keep it set at the highest temperature you can. The higher your air conditioner is set, the less it cools and the more it saves you in electricity. An air conditioner is bar far the most expensive way to cool your home. So, use them as minimally as possible.

2. Play the temperature game. Have both an inside and outside thermometer. Watch the two and when the temperature outside drops below the one inside (usually in the evening), open all your windows. Then when the temperature warms up outside more than the inside (usually in the morning) close all the windows again.

3. Use tons of fans. Even though fans do require electricity, they use a lot less than an air conditioner and can actually make you feel amazing cooler. Have as many fans as you can, even moving one around from room to room with you. You can also use a window fan to help blow the cooler night air in, and then the warmer house air out during the day. Try fans to move the cooler air around your home like blowing the air upstairs from a basement. An attic fan is also an outstanding way to cool a whole house down for minimal cost.

4. Use heat-generating appliances during the cooler evening hours. Cook outside on a barbecue and wash dishes or laundry at night.
