More Career Switching in the Later Years

Let’s say you thought it through and decided the risks of a career change later in life are worth the benefits. You are willing to sacrifice, as your job is a major part of who you are and what you do. If you aren’t happy as you grow older, you don’t have many years left. Once you get too close to retirement, changing jobs is often almost impossible. Therefore, if the time is now and you want to make it happen, then go for it! Easier said than done, right? Often people don’t bother changing careers as they grow older … Continue reading

Sacrifice Now or Sacrifice Later

If you are struggling to find the inspiration or reason to begin taking control of your finances you ought to think about the freedom that being debt free with a large savings account will allow you to accomplish. You will have the means and ability to do the things that matter most to you. Here are some examples of dreams that were realized as a result of being financial responsible. 1) I know one couple who was able to completely quit their jobs for a year. They used this time to tour the United States (you could choose Europe or … Continue reading

Managing Family Paperwork

You know, I just had a realization. This realization involved the family paperwork. I do far too much of the stuff. Our paperwork takes at least 45 minutes every day, and that’s with one child. Granted, we have some complexities, but so do all families. I have a medical condition that involves paperwork. We’re members of a number of farm shares that need paperwork-related attention. We go to church. My daughter has extracurricular activities. She goes to school. I attend classes. We have a lot of pets. I run a couple of small businesses. Oh yes, and there are the … Continue reading

Hard Habit to Break

The last few weeks I’ve gotten into the bad habit of letting my son sleep in my bed with me. It started out totally innocent. He’d wake up in the middle of the night from a bad dream and climb in bed with me until I could soothe him back to sleep and put him back in his bed. Lately I’ve just been too tired to struggle to lift him back into his bed, so I’ve just left him in bed with me. I think he caught on, because now every night he asks if he can “snuggle” with me … Continue reading

In Awe

A friend of mine told me about a girl that I knew nothing about the other day, but it really impacted me, and I’ve been thinking about her ever since. I haven’t read her book, or been a long-time reader of her blog like I’m sure many people have, but I am impressed by her selflessness. If the whole world could have her attitude and obvious trust in God in all things, then the world would definitely be a better place. Her blog is here. She is 23 years old. And, she has adopted 13 Ugandan girls. Yes, it blew … Continue reading

Father’s Day

Growing up Father’s Day was really difficult for me. My parents split when I was very young and my dad wasn’t exactly someone I looked up to, as he was never a part of my life after that. As Father’s Day approached each year I remember feeling jealous of my friends who had fathers to celebrate. I didn’t mind not having a father the rest of the year, but Father’s Day was always a blaring reminder of the father I never had. Years later the man who I now call “father” came into my life and was able to fill … Continue reading

Making May More Manageable

I am a sucker for alliteration. Can you tell? In a previous post, I lamented the madness that accompanies the merry month of May. From graduations and end of the school year concerts, sports tournaments, plays and awards banquets to Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, it’s enough to challenge even the most seasoned multitasker. It’s one thing to be present at each event, but quite another when you are responsible for bringing a gift, food item or other contribution. Right now, I am taking it one day at a time. This weekend, my goal is to complete my Mother’s Day … Continue reading

Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans

Do you have an ancestor who served in World War II? There is now a lineage based genealogical society that you can join. The Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans was designed for people who can prove family ancestry and lineage from an American WWII Veteran. There are some genealogical societies that require members to prove that their ancestor served in a certain war. The Daughters of the American Revolution is one example of these types of organizations. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will only accept members who are female, and who are at least eighteen … Continue reading

Single-Parenting vs. Adoption

Single parenting can come about in a number of ways. Some of us were thrust into it unwillingly as a result of a divorce, others are faced with a difficult decision; single parent or place. I have been on both ends of the single parenting spectrum. I was just out of high school and faced with the most difficult decision of my life. My boyfriend and I had just broken up less than 24 hours before I found myself pregnant. A good friend of mine found herself in a similar situation not long after I did. One of us chose … Continue reading
