Pride vs. Charity

Let’s face it. We’ve all had times in our lives when we’ve had to receive hand-outs. At least, we perceived them as hand-outs—chances are, they were lovingly given offerings of help. But it’s hard to accept them in the same spirit sometimes. We want to be self-sufficient, and when we fall on hard times, it can be difficult to accept help without feeling bad about it. There is a certain amount of self-esteem that comes with providing for yourself, but there are times when it can cross a line and become pride, which is hurtful to you and your family. … Continue reading

One Million Acts of Kindness

When I was a kid, I always thought I’d do something to make a difference. Nothing huge – I didn’t aspire to be president or cure cancer, but something small, but significant. I guess it was a fantasy that I don’t think I ever really fulfilled. However, Bob Votruba doesn’t have to worry about making a difference because he decided to make a different. He bought an old bus and had family members help paint it. Then he and his faithful companion Bogart (a Boston terrier), set out to remind people to be kind. Sounds like a simple idea, doesn’t … Continue reading

Teach Children To Give

When I was a little girl and my parents gave me an allowance I was required to tithe ten percent to church. I dutifully put a dime in the tithe envelope and deposited the envelope in the offering plate in children’s church. We advocate for children now by fostering. Jessie is learning to care for others less fortunate by sharing her home, parents, and possessions with them. When she has a better understanding of money, then we will start to instill in her more of a stewardship to help others. There are opportunities all around us to help others. Start … Continue reading

National Pancake Day

Are you more likely to take part in an event or activity if the proceeds go to help a charity that you’re passionate about? The DFW Family Expo is coming up and the money is to benefit Children’s Medical Center. I love Children’s Medical Center. My first pediatrician was in the foster clinic at Dallas Children’s. Many of my current infant’s specialists are at Plano Children’s. Dallas Children’s surgically removed the quarter from Jessie’s throat. I am more than happy to support any organization that supports Children’s Medical Center. I remember giving money at Sam’s Club when Sam’s was collecting … Continue reading

Toy Invasion

Is there a room in your house that doesn’t have a single toy in it? Yesterday I realized that the only place in our home that has not been infiltrated by my preschooler’s toys is the laundry room. And that room only qualifies as the “winner” if I don’t count the tiny pile of plastic animals I extracted from my daughter’s pockets the other day. The jungle creatures have temporarily set up residence on top of the dryer. The rest of our abode looks like the inside of a daycare facility. There are piles of plastic dinosaurs in the hallway, … Continue reading
