Are we in a recession? That is the question of the day in the political circles. The problem with today's political arena is the economy becomes a tool for the games politicians play.

I always watch election year with a bit of cynicism. The games our elected officials play with our economy in order to win the election or prove their point, go beyond just silly. At times, they can have serious impact to our country's future and our own pocketbooks.

One of the most significant financial problems with our country is its shortsightedness. With a new presidential election every four years, most economic decisions are only based on a short-term success. Long range planning is avoided, because there is no way to actually show the voters the political group had any affect on it.

Important financial decisions, like investing in education, social security or the business market are lost in this short-term philosophy. Therefore, as a nation, we continue to cycle and fight the same economic battles election after election.

What can we do? I ask myself that question every four years. Certainly, we can get out and vote. If more people in this country actually voted this would be a different place. Right now, large sections of our population are simply not represented in government because almost half of United States citizens don't vote.

Being involved in the big picture will help, especially if you do it collectively. However, the main influence we have is much smaller. As parents, we need to teach our kids. Show them the importance of the government and economy. Let's help them to understand their money management, the global economy, and politics. Make sure they grow up with the proper wisdom. That is our best investment in the future.
