Tis the Season of Getting

I am going to just throw this out there;  I don’t see anything wrong with buying your children a lot of gifts.  Christmas may not be about gifts but we all know gifts help make the season bright.  If we didn’t believe that we wouldn’t give to Toys for Tots, Operation Homefront, or go into an insane amount of debt every year.  Like it or not, gifts are here to stay and I do not feel that is negative.  Who doesn’t like to unwrap a gift?  Who doesn’t like to see their children’s eyes light up when they open that … Continue reading

Representative Lois Capps Concerned About ACA Ruling

It has been said that the Supreme Court could reveal its decisions about the Affordable Care Act, (ACA) this week. Representative Lois Capps is concerned about how the decision will affect the people she represents. A reversal of the ACA would negatively affect many Americans. There are several potential ways that the Supreme Court could go in its decision regarding the Affordable Care Act. It could uphold the entire ACA, exactly as it stands. It could declare the entire ACA unconstitutional. It could “cherry pick” the ACA by declaring only certain parts to be unconstitutional. Representative Lois Capps, a Democrat … Continue reading

Is Your Job Overrated?

The other day, Stephanie Romero wrote a wonderful post about the most depressing jobs. Recently, I came across an article on CNBC that talked about the twelve most overrated jobs. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, not only because one of my jobs is on this list but also because some of these jobs are the kinds of things that well meaning parents push their children to aspire to even though they do not really know anything about what having one of those jobs is really like. I know from experience that it is hard to … Continue reading

Black Thursday? Have Stores Gone Too Far?

This year, many stores are planning to open their doors late in the day on Thanksgiving in an attempt to lure Black Friday shoppers and their hard earned money into their stores. This move by retailers seems to have sparked a bit of an outrage among consumers and also among the employees of those stores. I love Black Friday and my husband and I have shopped on Black Friday every year for the past three years after we discovered how good the deals were. That said, I must agree with the employees and consumers that feel that starting sales on … Continue reading

Debit Card Fees

I was driving home the other day and the radio host was talking about banking fees. I wish I hadn’t been almost at our destination because I would have enjoyed hearing more of the show. The part I heard was about new fees for using debit cards. I love my debit card. It’s fast and it’s easy. It’s not a credit card, so I can spend only the money I have. It’s not checks, so I don’t have to carry a pen or hold up a line filling in the blanks. Debit cards are one of the best advancements in … Continue reading

The A B C’s of Money – Part 1

Money has a language all its own. By learning about the words that are associated with money and financial matters, you can take a step towards increasing your financial literacy. Here are a few money words to get you started. An adjustable rate mortgage, also known as an ARM, is something that you want to make absolutely sure you want before you get it. With an ARM, the interest rate on your mortgage starts out low. This can help people qualify for ARMs more easily than for fixed rate mortgages. However, the catch is that at the end of a … Continue reading

Deal With Those Things You Do Not Use

There are things that you buy that you love, and you use them until they are all used up (if they are consumables) or all worn out if they are things like clothes or shoes. Then there are those things that you may not want to talk about. Things that you have bought that you do not use, or that you never wear. Things that cost you money, things that are just sort of in your home (or a storage unit) taking up space. This is not a topic that people enjoy discussing because no one wants to admit to … Continue reading

Is That Deal As Good As It Looks?

There are times when what seems like a good thing is really not so good at all if you look at it more carefully. We are confronted with financial choices every day, from little decisions such as which brand of coffee to buy at the store to huge decisions like whether to refinance our mortgage. Sometimes if you are in a tight spot financially, options can appear that seem like they are tailor made for people just like you. It is often these very options that can end up doing you more harm than good. Here are a two common … Continue reading

Oh The Ways We Get Into Debt

There seems to be an endless list of ways that we can get ourselves into debt. In the interest of helping others to avoid going into debt, I thought that I would share some of the things that people do that lead them into debt, debt, and more debt. Knowledge is power, and perhaps knowing about these debt traps can help you to avoid them. One way that people get into debt is by doing someone else a favor and co-signing on a loan with them. Sometimes having a co-signer is the only way that that person will be given … Continue reading

What’s Your Family’s New Year’s Eve Tradition?

Holiday traditions are an excellent way to make and keep connections with the other members of your family. Many people turn on the TV, catch the countdown, and watch the ball drop in Times Square. A lot of people will always spend New Year’s Eve surrounded by crowds at a large gathering. Does your family have a traditional way to celebrate on New Year’s Eve? It’s fairly common to make New Year’s Resolutions on December 31, or January 1, and some family traditions include telling people what your resolutions for the new year will be. If you, and a few … Continue reading
