Living with Engineers: It’s All in the Timing

Another engineer’s wife and I were having a discussion about household chores yesterday.  We were bemoaning the fact that if we want our husbands to do something for us, we either need to tell them right away, or it won’t happen at all. The engineer’s mind is a constant one-way track of processing information.  It’s what makes them so brilliant and efficient: they zero in on a task, giving it their complete focus until it’s done.  I’m almost always thinking about other things while I’m working on something, which is why it can take me longer to achieve something with … Continue reading

Living Longer … But Living Well?

We live in a day and age of miracles. Because of advances in modern health care, we are now able to prevent disease and treat it effectively if it does take place. Senior citizens can expect to live longer than ever before, which is wonderful news. There will be more time to spend with grandchildren, working on hobbies, finishing up those projects that never quite got done. A hundred and fifty years ago, living to the age of seventy was considered quite amazing. Today, seventy-year-olds are out on the golf course or in the swimming pool, putting the younger men … Continue reading

Living without Credit Cards

It has been several years since I have used a credit card. It started after a long period of unemployment for my husband when we were just maxed out and I could not use them. As time went on and our situation loosened, I never really saw the need to begin using them again. If I wanted something, I used cash, (or a debit card), and never relied on money I didn’t have to buy anything. When I traveled to Los Angelos from GA last summer, I thought I was going to use credit to survive on my trip. I … Continue reading

Outdoor Living: Not a New Idea

Stop and think about it. While there may not have been as much fanfare over outdoor living in the past, or it may not have even been described in that way, it’s not a new concept. Look at older homes in the South or even newer designs created with that old-fashioned, southern mansion charm. Huge, covered, wrap-around porches encircling homes are a perfect example and rocking chairs and swings aligning those porches make it an even stronger statement. I love those old houses. Wrap around porches just give me a sense of family. Long, leisurely afternoons enjoying simple things like … Continue reading

Boost Your Blog Traffic: The Informational Post

Seeking out information is what many web surfers love to do. If you can offer great information, you can be sure to boost the number of visits that your blog gets. An informational post is one in which you give information on a topic. It differs from an instructional post in that it informs rather than instructs. It is generally fact or new based, although writing opinions can sometimes work as well. It could take the form of a definition, such as what is a lentil? Or it can be some sort of longer explanation that takes the form of … Continue reading
