What Not to Do in Front of Your Kids When It Comes to Money

Children learn what they see. It is a true statement for any kind of behavior including money management. Children’s attitudes toward money and whether or not they will be able to make it work for them as adults has much to do with their parents. If you are married, think about any differences that there might be between you and your spouse, regarding any issues having to do with money. Is one of you more a saver than a spender? Do you approach investing or debt the same way? Chances are that you may each have different ideas about handling … Continue reading

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. Forced Money Management

In my previous business world experience, we had a saying “bad business makes you smarter.” The theory behind this was if your business was bad it forced you to research and evaluate all that you were doing. If business was good, you simply sat back and enjoyed the ride – even if there were things that you could do better, there wasn’t any incentive to work any harder. This philosophy plays out in many families as well. The budget doesn’t get pulled out until a time of financial strife, either forced or chosen. Even with all my money experience, my … Continue reading

Some Serious Work

Recently I’ve been stranded in a variety of locations without an internet connection. There have been several engagements I needed to attend but there was ample time lost for the work I needed to do. When I was heading to these events I dutifully packed my computer, a pair of headphones, a number of writing utensils, some loose leaf paper and a couple thumb drives (for backup on-the-go). With this limited list of items I could fill the hours of waiting for the events to begin (we were getting there very early) with meaninful and productive work… or so I … Continue reading

Death Row Records Auctioned Off

Death Row Records, made famous by such acts as Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, has been sold at an auction. Founded in 1991, it was one of rap’s best-known labels, which sold tens of millions of albums in the early 90s when Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Snoop were just getting their start in the music industry. However, owner Marion “Suge” Knight had gotten in trouble with debt and mismanagement of the label, which forced the auction. By the late 90s, his most famous acts had left the label. However, as owner of the original master recordings, Death Row … Continue reading

There Can Be Risk in All Sorts of Choices

As single parents, many of us often find ourselves trying to do anything we can to minimize and reduce risk. After all, life can feel so precarious much of the time and any safety and security we can create really feels like a good thing. I do think it is important to remember, however, that we have to step outside that safety zone if we are going to stimulate growth and accept the inevitable changes. Most choices—even the best and safest ones—have an element of risk… Let us think this thing through—think of times when you have made a change … Continue reading

Helping Relatives with Their Finances

It is difficult to give money to someone, and then watch them use it unwisely. Loaning money to someone can also be very difficult, especially if you need the money. Also finances tend to be something that people keep to themselves, so it may be difficult to help them begin to budget or change their habits. Here are four tips when it comes to helping family members with money issues. 1) Never loan someone … Continue reading
