Documenting the American Dream

Summer is primetime for moving. What’s more, with the record-low interest rates currently being offered on home loans, an increasing amount of renters are taking the leap into home ownership. Purchasing a home for the first time is a major milestone in a person’s life and warrants thorough documentation. If you are a scrapbooker, then this new chapter in your life is especially momentous as you can use it to create a memory book you will treasure forever. Crafting a new home-themed scrapbook is not as challenging as it may sound. Actually, if you document the process from start to … Continue reading

Documenting Commencement Traditions

You know the time-honored tradition of tossing your graduation cap in the air at the end of a commencement ceremony? Yeah… never did it. When I graduated from high school, I was too afraid of not being able to find my cap in the ensuing post-ceremony chaos that I simply kept my mortarboard bobby pinned to my head. When I graduated from college, I didn’t dare toss my black cap into the air because I was having a horrendous hair day. There was no way I was going to be photographed without something masking my messed up mane. Also, I … Continue reading

Documenting Game Day

If there’s one genre of photography that I find most challenging it’s action photography. For some reason I lack the quick reflexes and focus needed to capture the drama which unfolds on the court, field or in the water. However, summer is just a few weeks away and my daughter is signed up for soccer camp, so I am trying to complete a crash course in action photography in order to document her achievements. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: Camera: I’m all about making do with what you have, but when it comes to snapping high action shots, a … Continue reading

Helen Radkey’s Research is Controversial

Helen Radkey is not a professional genealogist, but her research has gotten quite a bit of attention anyway. She has been keeping track of the names that are entered into the LDS proxy database, and making some of those names public – particularly the names of Holocaust victims. She has also taken an interest in the ancestry of Mitt Romney. There is a controversy involving the LDS church, and the proxy baptisms of people who were Jewish, and who were Holocaust victims. This is definitely a situation where the practice of genealogy, and religious beliefs, collide. The Church of Jesus … Continue reading

Documenting is Key

When it comes to filing taxes, documentation is key. Without solid proof to back up your figures, you risk getting into hot water with the IRS, especially if you are audited. In a previous blog, I gave you important information regarding the home office deduction. I detailed the requirements needed to qualify and listed caveats that could make or break your eligibility. It is critical that you realize that the home office deduction is available only to people who are operating legitimate businesses from their residence. Uncle Sam doesn’t tolerate people who file for the home office deduction when they … Continue reading

Documenting Landscapes

At the risk of offending residents of the 49th state, my ideal vacation destination is not Alaska. Allow me to explain: I live in freezing cold temperatures for more than half the year in northern Wisconsin, so the last place I want to venture when I get the chance is another cold climate. And I born and raised in Hawaii, so understand my teeny-tiny tolerance for snow and ice. Still, Alaska is home to some of the most stunning natural scenery in the world. I got an eyeful last week when viewing photos taken by my high school friend who … Continue reading

Document the Day

It’s a snow day around here.  And by snow day I mean, schools are closed, highways are blocked, and I am praying that the electricity stays on so that I can post this without incident. Snow and cold are nothing new in northern Wisconsin, especially in January.  However, when we get hit with a storm as massive as this one, even I venture out to document the aftermath.  Then, I do what any self-respecting scrapbook fanatic does; create a layout employing as many techniques as possible. You don’t need to wait for a major milestone to craft an eye-popping page … Continue reading
