What Do You Do When Your Kid is More Talented Than His Peers?

I feel for 9-year-old Jericho Scott. The young boy, who is an outstanding baseball player (with an arm most pros would envy), is being ostracized because his talents exceed those of his peers. The little leaguer’s story has made headlines around the world and just goes to prove that sometimes being too good at something has its disadvantages. If you haven’t heard of Scott allow me to get you up to speed: For starters the fourth grader has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. According to reports, the boy whips balls faster than males twice his age. … Continue reading

Do you Need a Power of Attorney?

Most people envision a power of attorney as something you designate on your deathbed. Actually, this is the worst time to attempt this decision. When my husband and I completed our wills, the lawyer also had a file the paperwork for the power of attorney. My first thought was why? As my husband, can’t he already access all our bills and accounts anyway? Not completely… any joint assets like a house can’t be sold without the consent of both parties. Imagine a scenario where you were in an accident, unable to respond, and the bills were stacking up. Your spouse … Continue reading

DeGeneres’ Doggy Drama Escalates

So much for that happy ending I predicted… Ellen DeGeneres cried her eyes out on her show yesterday as she recounted the events that led to her dog being taken from her hairstylist’s home. But, it appears the comedian’s tearful plea didn’t help soften the hearts of the owners of a dog agency that maintains DeGeneres violated an adoption contract. In fact, it looks as though the ugly situation is getting even uglier. According to news reports, as a result of the massive media exposure this doggy drama has created, the owners of Mutts and Moms (the agency DeGeneres got … Continue reading

Preparing for Life’s End

As I grow older I realize that I am not invincible, like I was thought I was. I am realizing that I cannot do the things that I used to do and it scares me. It is not that I am afraid to leave this world, I am afraid for those that I leave behind. Just the other day I was talking to someone. He said that he was driving along the road and realized that he used to think of future plans and things that he would like to do in life. Now he finds himself preparing for the … Continue reading

What is Financial Abuse?

Abuse is a tricky topic that people are often not comfortable discussing. It can come in many forms, only some of which are obvious. Financial abuse is one of the ways that an abuser can harm their victim, and it is often directed at a spouse or domestic partner or an elderly relative. The effects of financial abuse can be devastating and can restrict the victim’s ability to leave the abusive relationship. In marital and domestic relationships, an abuser often uses one or more tactics to restrict the other person’s access to money. They accomplish this by stealing money from … Continue reading

Estate Planning

Estate planning should be a continual process, always evolving as your life changes. Ideally, you should review your plan yearly and every time you undergo a major lifestyle change. One such event is a change in martial status. Since marriage is a legal union, it comes with an assortment of financial changes and rights as well. With a new marriage, benefits such as Social Security, veterans, pensions, and retirement accounts will change. In addition, depending on the laws in your state, your assets and liabilities will also merge. Before marriage and shortly after is a great time to review your … Continue reading

E-ZPass Exposes Infidelities

Attention adulterers: You may be cruising for a bruising if you are cheating on your loved one and own an E-ZPass. Who knew a little piece of plastic could cause so much trouble? It seems the E-ZPass (a type of electronic toll collection device) is emerging as a powerful means of proving infidelity. The reason: the contraception, that’s no bigger than the common garage door opener, allows suspicious spouses to check out where their cheating mates have been. One New York divorce attorney who has used E-ZPass records several times in court says this about the device: “E-ZPass is an … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – California

We started our journey on the East Coast, a few weeks ago, exploring marriage laws. We’ve learned quite a few interesting things along the way and we only have four states left after our visit to the Golden State of California today. I saved California for close to the end because there were so many changes going on there. We’ll touch upon some of these changes and shifts in the law and more. So let’s get started at looking at the marriage laws in: California Each county may have its own requirements, so be sure to check ahead of time. … Continue reading

Flaws: Sometimes It’s the Imperfections that are the Most Endearing

As far as husbands go, Wayne comes close to being nearly perfect. He’s kind, considerate, and generous, but most of all he’s patient. Because as far as wives go, I’m more Lucille Ball than Martha Stewart. However, Wayne has his moments when his flaws shine so bright they’re blinding. He doesn’t have many of them, but the ones he does have…wow! They’re doozies! Flaw One: Mr. Whatever Being flexible is a good thing. Being able to go with almost any flow and have fun no matter the occasion or surroundings is an awesome trait. But when I need help deciding … Continue reading
