Splits, Splits, and more Splits

It’s a revolving marital door in Hollywood, isn’t it? Every week someone is either getting married or divorcing and this week is no different. Two couples that I thought were pretty solid decided to split. The first split announced was that of Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson and director Cameron Crowe. The couple was introduced by Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis in the early ‘80s. Although I’ve seen Crowe’s Fast Times at Ridgement High a billion times, I only recently realized that the “beautiful girl in the corvette” (as she is credited) is Wilson. The couple was married on July 27, … Continue reading

Divorce Insurance Actually Exists!

It might seem strange to think about, but divorce insurance really does exist! This is not the same thing as pre-nuptual insurance. Some may feel that divorce insurance sounds like an incredibly negative type of insurance policy. Others, however, might decide that the benefits of having this kind of insurance is something they are interested in at least checking out. Everyone assumes that they will experience a nearly perfect, “happily ever after”, kind of marriage. Some couples will be comfortable signing a pre-nuptual agreement before they say “I do”. A pre-nuptual agreement is a written contract that legally defines certain … Continue reading

Reunited and It Feels So Good

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought I would share the moving story (in more ways than one) of a 13-year-old boy who desperately wanted to see his mother. When you’re done reading, consider what lengths your child would take to spend time with you, and whether the teen’s efforts are not the sign of a larger problem. Kenton Weaver missed his mom. A lot. So much, in fact, that he didn’t let his age, or the fact that he has Asperger’s Syndrome, stop him from formulating a plan to be reunited with the woman who gave him life. A … Continue reading

Obnoxious Husbands

Are any of your girlfriends married to obnoxious husbands? Or do you ever run across couples while you’re out and about and witness an exchange between them that makes you think, “Wow. That guy’s really obnoxious. How does she put up with him?” I have a couple of friends who are married to husbands who would be too much for me. They’re nice enough guys, and they love their wives to pieces (which is how I’ve determined my friends put up with them), but I couldn’t do it. My personality would clash with theirs. Because of my experiences with my … Continue reading

Tragedy and Relationships

By now you have probably seen the video showing the horrific plane crash that claimed the lives of former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker’s assistant, his bodyguard and the pilot and co-pilot on board the Learjet that exploded into a fireball in South Carolina late Friday night. Investigators announced yesterday that the pilot and co-pilot died from smoke inhalation and burns while Barker’s assistant, 29-year-old Chris Baker and bodyguard 25-year-old Charles Still were killed on impact when the plane they were in with the musician turned reality TV star and celebrity disc jockey DJ AM went skidding off a runway and … Continue reading

How to Cancel a Credit Card

If you read my blog entry yesterday, you may be deciding which credit cards you would like to cancel. I thought it might help to offer up a few tips on how to cancel a credit card. First, there is no wrong way to cancel a credit card account. Still, there are some important steps to follow in the process. 1. Make sure you have paid off every cent on your account before you attempt to cancel. Even if you have a small balance, if you try to cancel the card it can wreck havoc with the credit card company. … Continue reading

Closing Credit Accounts

Many years ago, I cleaned up my credit. I had paid off all my debts (minus our mortgage) and wanted to simplify my credit assortment. Back then, I had no awareness of credit scores. All I knew was I didn’t want to have so many accounts to keep track of. Today, the talk of the town is about improving credit scores. What I didn’t realize back then, was that closing off most of your credit accounts can actually hurt your score. Still, if you want to simplify, there are ways to do that and still maintain a decent credit report. … Continue reading

Divorce and Credit

A divorce can affect your credit in many ways. Whether you are divorced, planning to get divorced, or want to protect yourself “just in case,” there a few things to consider. For some, if all the bills have been in one spouse’s name and not the other, you may find you don’t have a credit history. This can hurt one’s ability to get loans after a divorce. This is one reason why it is important to keep some credit accounts in each spouse’s name. It can protect your finances against a variety of ills… divorce, spousal death, disability, etc. Some … Continue reading

Horses, Dogs, and Cats: Why It’s No Mystery They Appear in Kathleen Delaney’s Books

I didn’t plan it this way, but this seems to be the week for interviews with authors who have both Italian Greyhounds and German Shepherds. (Yesterday I posted an interview with author Lauren Carr whose pet menagerie also includes these breeds.) As you can tell from the above picture, the author du jour, Ms. Kathleen Delaney, also has two such dogs. Besides accompanying her to book signings, how else do her pooches help with her writing process? And does she model any characters after them? My inquiring mind wanted to know that and more, and Ms. Delaney was kind enough … Continue reading

Privacy and Money

Have you ever noticed how many people will tell you intimate details about their love lives, but not about their bank accounts? There is a significant stigma about discussing money in your relationships. Is this good or not? In our culture, money often equates to power and prestige. People view discussions about money as bragging or whining – depending on the situation. Therefore, very few people broach the subject, even with close friends or family. While for many friendships, this is not a problem. In other relationships though, not discussing money can create a serious problem. The best example of … Continue reading
