Sacrificial Credit

It’s rare that a husband and wife will have similar credit scores. They each began their credit history as singles, long before they joined their lives together, and their numbers will sometimes be vastly different. Sometimes the man’s score will be much higher than the wife’s, and other times, it will be vice versa. I’ll use myself and my husband as an example, where mine has always been higher than his. When we were first married, I was at 730, and he was at 650. He’d had a former roommate who ran up the phone bill (in my husband’s name) … Continue reading

Remembering Cher Ami and Other Veteran Carrier Pigeons

When Wayne and I took a trip to Washington, D.C. last year, I was blown away. I’d never been there before and didn’t really know what to expect. I sure wasn’t expecting to become so smitten with the place. It captured my heart and still has yet to let go. (I’m thinking it probably never will. I absolutely loved my visit there.) The museums were all incredible. And something I thought was really neat was how I found a story about an animal detailed in almost all of them. Animals Make Up Our History, Too Like when we were in … Continue reading

Marriage During the Great Depression

Yesterday I wrote about how I’m bracing my marriage for a depression. I also admitted that I’m afraid of what’s to come…but that I’m going to face that fear head on and find a way to make all this benefit my marriage. I’m still not entirely sure how I’m going to do that, but I figured knowledge is power so my best bet is to start off arming myself with some of that. Researching the Great Depression If only my grandparents were still alive. Both sets survived the Great Depression. They could advise me how they made it, maybe give … Continue reading

The Credit Reporting System

Ever wonder how the credit report system works? Well, it is a big enterprise for sure, run by voluntary transactions that affect you both negatively and positively. There are three major credit agencies. The information they gather is reported to them voluntarily by businesses. Any business that holds consumer accounts can report information on you both positive and negative. The agencies simply gather the information and place it on individual credit reports. This information is then used to create your actual credit score. Since there are three major agencies, each one of them collects different information, which is why you … Continue reading

Divorce and Credit

A divorce can affect your credit in many ways. Whether you are divorced, planning to get divorced, or want to protect yourself “just in case,” there a few things to consider. For some, if all the bills have been in one spouse’s name and not the other, you may find you don’t have a credit history. This can hurt one’s ability to get loans after a divorce. This is one reason why it is important to keep some credit accounts in each spouse’s name. It can protect your finances against a variety of ills… divorce, spousal death, disability, etc. Some … Continue reading

Credit History and Marriage

Often when two come together in matrimony, the question of money and credit will arise. While a husband and wife may love each other, they may not be a match with their credit scores. If one spouse has a significantly worse credit history, does it affect the other? While a couple joins in many ways, their credit history does not have to. Credit reports are entirely individual and so are the credit scores. There is no such thing as a joint credit report or credit score. Even when a couple applies for a loan together, like a mortgage, their individual … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Proposalversaries: Facts and Figures

Yes, today is Valentine’s Day, but if you happened to get proposed to on Valentine’s Day then it’s also your Proposalversary. I was curious about how many couple’s get engaged on Valentine’s Day so I tried to find some statistics. I was kind of surprised by what I learned. For one thing, who knew the U.S. Census Bureau kept (sort of) certain statistics of the nature I was looking for? For another, there were at least two other days I hadn’t even considered that were quite popular proposal days. I listed these and all my other revelations below. Did You … Continue reading

Norwegian Elkhounds, Fat Cats, and Grey Mice: An Interview with Author Pat Harrington

Photo of Patricia Harrington and her dog Have you noticed a pattern this week? I’ve been posting lots of interviews with authors who have some kind of animal connection. Either because they incorporate animals into their writing, have pets who help with their writing, or, has been the case most often, have pets who help with their writing who also appear in it. I’m very pleased that my next victim –er, I mean subject—agreed to do this interview. She’s been a bit of a role model to me these past eight years. (Ever since I first got serious about writing.) … Continue reading

Lauren and Jason: When “The” Ex Proposes to Someone Else

Last week I used Spencer and Heidi of The Hills fame to examine the pros and cons of living together. This week I’m going to talk about Lauren Conrad and her ex Jason, who came back into her life with a shocking surprise. A Little History Lauren and Jason have been on again/off again since the Laguna Beach days. (Laguna Beach was the predecessor to The Hills. That show followed Lauren and friends during high school.) At the end of the first season of The Hills, Lauren gave up an internship in Paris to spend the summer living with Jason … Continue reading
