Don’t Forget the College Spending Money

Once you get through paying for tuition, text books, room and board, supplies and activity fees, there is one more expense you have to count in–the monthly spending money that your college kids will need. Most college websites are very helpful with suggestions of how much money your student will need, with suggestions averaging $200-$300 a month, minimum, to cover expenses from laundry to shampoo to late night pizza runs. While these suggestions are helpful, the real amount is going to depend on your student, where he or she goes to school and what kind of lifestyle he or she … Continue reading

Back-to-School Debit Cards

Back-to-school is infiltrating every aspect of my finances, from my wallet to my bank statements. My latest statement included a brochure on debit cards for college co-eds. Apparently, my bank offers a special card program designed specifically for students who are leaving the nest this fall. In the case of my bank, parents must open and maintain the accounts, though their college-bound students can access the funds via a bank-issued Visa or MasterCard debit card. Moms and dads can then track their kid’s spending throughout the academic year. Bank cards are just one of dozens of options parents have if … Continue reading

College Students and the CARD Act

College students all across the nation are getting ready to head off to school, and start a new semester. However, students who are under the age of 21 might not be leaving home with a credit card in hand. This could be a good thing, or a big inconvenience, depending on your point of view. This is one of the effects of the CARD Act. The CARD Act is the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act, which was signed in 2009. This Act provided a series of protections for consumers, and prevented credit card companies from continuing to do … Continue reading

The College Smell Test

When it comes to figuring out whether something is still okay to eat, college students typically turn to their noses. Much like their cavemen ancestors, they smell a food item and then determine if it is safe to eat. The only problem: 90 percent of the time their nose doesn’t know. Seriously, someone spent money proving this fact. A survey of more than 6,000 college students published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that “young adults, particularly white men, engage in risky eating behaviors” by consuming undercooked animal products, which carry risks of illness. College students are … Continue reading

If your child just started classes at the University of California-San Diego he or she has a better chance of avoiding the dreaded “Freshman Fifteen.” At least that’s what school administrators maintain. Your 18-Year-Old “Child” is Technically an Adult

In the United States, a person legally becomes an adult when he or she reaches age 18. This might be a shock to parents whose 18-year-olds are finishing high school and living under their roof. Parents need to be aware of certain things that change the minute their “baby” turns 18. Your child will always be your “baby”, no matter how old they become. However, legally speaking, that “baby” turns into an adult on his or her 18th birthday. Parents need to prepare themselves to accept this fact. An adult is not legally obligated to check in with his or … Continue reading
