Holiday Parties and Christmas Bonuses

At this time of year, home – based professionals may be getting all nostalgic about two things that they remember from working outside of the home. Holiday parties and Christmas bonuses are things that used to be commonplace for many professionals who were employed outside of the home. In recent years bonuses and gifts have become a more modest, but many people do still get a little something from their employer. Most places of employment have some form of holiday party, too. Now that you work from home, are holiday bonuses and parties a thing of the past? They don’t … Continue reading

Club Hopping

My first foray into scrapbook kit clubs came courtesy of a Christmas gift. I was given a membership as a stocking stuffer and loved getting a box filled with scrapbooking supplies in the mail each month. It was only after my membership expired and I looked into renewing it that I realized that being part of a kit club doesn’t come cheap. In addition, I discovered there is a litany of kit club options that cater to all sorts of crafters. For example, some monthly clubs offer supplies specifically for altered art projects, while others are better suited for extremely … Continue reading

Christmas Club

Remember Christmas Club accounts? The Clubs were popular during the Great Depression. The point of the account was to deposit money regularly throughout the year and then withdraw the funds before Christmas. The account earned interest and was probably set up like a CD. It was a great tool to take some of the stress out of Christmas shopping. It’s so much better to prepare for the event than to go into debt with spending. The end of November is the wrong time to start a Christmas Club for this Christmas, so what can you do to minimize the damage … Continue reading

Scrapbook Kit Clubs: How does it work?

Have you ever tried joining a Scrapbooking Kit Club? These have become more and more popular over the past few years, and it is the way to get the latest, newest, and cutest stuff for sure! I have joined one of these clubs, and I had so much fun waiting for each kit to come delivered to my door in the mail. It was like Christmas every month! While I’m not sure that these kit clubs can save you a ton of money, they might save you a little on the newest styles and brands of scrapbooking supplies. It is … Continue reading

An Alternative (Please!) to the Adoption of the Month Club

In my last blog, referring to various obituaries written about Patrick Swayze, I talked about how calling attention to a person’s adoption without reason can seem to make a false distinction between permanently adopted family members and other permanent family members. Respect for the concept of permanence is also why I was a bit sad to receive a catalog in the mail yesterday. The National Wildlife Foundation suggests giving your child an “adoption kit” for Christmas. This will include a stuffed animal (size dependent on the price level you choose). In a more “deluxe adoption”, you will receive a book … Continue reading

Make a Splash this Christmas

Here’s a great holiday gift idea for the family that doesn’t need another board game, blender, or photo album—a gift card to a water park. Several indoor water parks across the country are offering fabulous savings on weekend stays while others are offering bargains on day passes. The idea is to give families a fun place to bond while the kids are out of school. For example, Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania, home to the brand new Split Rock Resort & Golf Club, is offering amazing deals for its new indoor water park. The massive $19 million park, called H20ooohh Indoor Family … Continue reading

Free Christmas Fun in Indianapolis

Who says you need to spend a bundle to have some holiday family fun? The economy is tanking and managers of Indianapolis-area attractions are responding by offering fabulous freebies during the 12 days leading up to Christmas. In what is being dubbed the “12 Free Days Of Indy Christmas” celebration, visitors will be gifted with free admission and other goodies at participating attractions. For example, on Saturday, December 13th, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum will be offering free admission to its collection of trophies and cars. On Sunday, December 14th, you can tour the President Benjamin Harrison … Continue reading

Looking for a Treadmill this Christmas?

If so, then you know it’s not as easy as banging out a letter to Santa and waking up to a PaceMaster Platinum Pro VR under the Christmas tree. Unless you are getting the exact replica of the treadmill you run on at the gym everyday, then you really need to do your homework. Treadmills come in a variety of sizes and feature a wide range of price tags. In a previous blog I listed some of Consumer Reports top picks for fold-up treadmills. If you have the space to accommodate a traditional nonfolding treadmill, fitness experts recommend you consider … Continue reading

Trendy Home Made Christmas Gifts

Yes, I know Christmas is still two months away, but what better time to get started on making some great Christmas gifts. Forget the old crocheted pot holders. While they may be nice, they certainly aren’t the most requested on everyone’s wish list. Instead take a look at what the trends say are going to be the hottest requested and given gifts this Christmas season. Home made gifts are definitely in for this season, probably because everyone is so budget conscious. The best part of these trendy gifts is that you can make them yourself frugally. Give gifts of your … Continue reading
