Bonus Update Released for Family Tree Maker 2012

Not too long ago, Ancestry.com announced that there would not be a 2013 version of the Family Tree Maker software. Instead, there would be periodic updates to Family Tree Maker 2012. One of those “Bonus Updates” has just been released. Ancestry.com is one of the most popular genealogy websites. Many genealogists who use the Family Tree Maker 2012 software were looking forward to the 2013 version. However, there is not going to be a Family Tree Maker 2013. Instead, there will be a series of updates to the existing 2012 version of the software (for both PC and for Mac). … Continue reading

Big Mac, Big Bonus

You might want to think twice the next time you feel the urge to smart mouth the guy who asks you if you want to super size your Big Mac combo meal. According to a new report in Businessweek, some McDonald’s employees are netting super-nice, supersized paychecks that may shock not-so nice customers. The magazine reports that in Dickinson, North Dakota, prospective McDonald’s workers are raking in $300 bonuses before they even ask customers if they want fries or apples in their kids’ Happy Meals. Not a bad haul for merely signing on the dotted line. In fact, studies show … Continue reading

Pop Culture Updates: Broadway Strike and Macy’s Parade

It’s official… Broadway stagehands are on strike. I blogged about their actions yesterday; however, at the time I used a mock scenario as an example of how the strike was affecting theatergoers. Then, last night on the news I saw video of the picket lines that went up at theaters around the Times Square area and heard the real-life heartbreaking tales of ticket holders who had traveled thousands of miles and spent hundreds of dollars for shows that went dark yesterday. One story that struck me was about a couple from Washington State who traveled to New York just to … Continue reading

Cloudy With a Chance of Tooth Showers

It’s raining teeth around here. Teeny-tiny, itsy-bitsy pearly whites belonging to a child who was absolutely convinced that she would go to her grave with all of her baby teeth intact. My 8-year-old has turned into a human slot machine, except when you pull her arm she spits out teeth instead of quarters. Which is not to say that she hasn’t made out like a pachislo addict. Who needs to hit the jackpot on a real one-arm bandit when you’ve got the Tooth Fairy making sure you win big when you loose little choppers? My daughter’s teeth have been falling … Continue reading

McDonald’s Changes Its Menu

A friend of mine is on a diet. The doctor says his health is great, so maybe it is just a preventative thing, but he’s on the glycemic index diet. So, he’s watching carbs and calories. I’ve decided to try to lose the 30 pounds I’ve packed back on before it’s too late. After all, I turn 50 next year and I know that the older you are, the harder it is to lose weight. McDonald’s has no doubt played a part in my weight gain. Oh sure, Ronald McDonald didn’t hold me down and force the Big Macs down … Continue reading

There Will Not Be a Family Tree Maker 2013

Genealogists who use Ancestry.com might be wondering when the next version of the Family Tree Maker software will come out. The short answer is that you can stop waiting. Instead of creating a Family Tree Maker 2013, there will be periodic updates to Family Tree Maker 2012. On July 13 of this year, there was a big problem with the Mac version of the Family Tree Maker software. Ancestry.com noted on their blog that they were were aware of the issue and were “working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible”. Whatever the issue was, it was not … Continue reading

How Much Money Do You Make?

Knowing that some fast food chains are handing out $5,000 signing bonuses to employees made me jealous… ahem! I mean curious. Curious about how many non-glamorous professions make up the top tier of highest paying jobs in America. If you think actors, professional athletes, politicians and Wall Street wheelers and dealers comprise the top spots, you might be surprised. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the professionals that raked in the most dough in 2010 were: 1. Anesthesiologists = $166,400+ 2. Internists = $166,400+ 3. OB/GYN = $166,400+ 4. Oral Surgeons = $166,400+ 5. Orthodontists = $166,400+ 6. General … Continue reading

Romantic Travel Options

Nothing says love quite like eloping on Valentine’s Day. Or at least that’s the belief of a travel company that just emailed me a list of the world’s most romantic places to say “I do.” To be perfectly honest, I don’t know a single person who has gotten hitched on Valentine’s Day. However, I agree that February 14th is an ideal day to spend with your special someone. Whereas I am not big on spontaneous vow exchanges, I wholeheartedly agree that the following travel destinations can certainly add romance to a relationship: Cruise Ships: Many cruise lines offer romantic packages … Continue reading
