What To Do About Bullies

My son is being bullied at preschool nearly every day, in fact, almost all the kids are. This little boy is younger than all the other kids, and frankly isn’t even supposed to be in the preschool room, but was so hard to handle that they kicked him out of the toddler room and sent him in with the big kids hoping things would be better. Needless to say, they’re not. The teachers are getting beat up, the kids are getting beat up, and my son isn’t enjoying preschool the way he once was. Bullies are becoming more and more … Continue reading

Press the “Bully Button”

A school in California is using technology to combat bullying. No, it doesn’t involve security cameras or anything like that. The school placed a “Bully Button” on its already existing app. Students (and parents, and other adults) can use it to report bullying anonymously. Nobody likes a bully. Despite this, there always seem to be some out there searching for someone to pick on. One of the problems with bullying in high school is that students become fearful of reporting it to school counselors or other staff. The concern many students have is that there is potential that the bully … Continue reading

Bullies and Mama Bears

There’s a bully in our preschool. All the kids are afraid of him. He hits, kicks, screams, throws toys at them. He’s younger than all the other kids, but they couldn’t handle him in the toddler room so they put him in the preschool room with the older kids. Logan has come home with bumps and bruises and it is almost always because of this little boy. The teachers do what they can, but he beats on them too. I’ve never seen a more difficult child, and it has been hard for me as a mother to have my little … Continue reading

Score One for the Mama Bear

When was the last time you unleashed your inner Mama Bear? Unless you are Caroline Ingalls, there’s a good chance you’ve let her roar on more than one occasion. Typically, moms turn from wise owls to angry bears when they feel their children are in danger and need protection. Apparently, that’s what compelled Florida mom Felecia Phillips to go ballistic on a kid accused of bullying her son Terec Smith. According to reports, when Terec told his mom he was being harassed by another kid, she escorted him to the school bus stop to confront the alleged bully. When she … Continue reading

Study Finds About Half of All Teens With Autism Are Bullied

This may not be a surprise to parents of children who have an autism spectrum disorder. A study has found that almost half of all teenagers who have autism are bullied at school. Researchers conclude that this indicates that schools are not doing enough to appropriately include teens with autism into general education classes. A study led by Paul R. Sterzing, the lead author from the University of California, Berkley, used records from a 2001 survey of 920 parents who had teenagers with an autism spectrum disorder. The researchers found that 46% of parents said that their autistic teenagers were … Continue reading

Bear or Bull

If you watch the stock page of the newspaper, you will often hear the terms bear and bull in relationship to the market. Some of you may or may not know what this means, and many of us have no idea how these two animals become involved in economics. Traditions say that when the stock price averages are in an upswing, then it is bull market. When it is in reverse and the price averages are going down, then it is a bear market. These terms are mainly used in relationship to the U.S. stock markets. Even in a bull … Continue reading

The Country Bears (2002)

I’m delighted to say that my long search for a good children’s movie (after a long drought) has come to an end. I watched “The Country Bears” with my kids this afternoon, and we all loved it. Beary Barrington (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) has always felt a little out of place in his family. Could it be because they’re all humans and he’s a bear? His parents try to tell him he’s not adopted, but he knows something just doesn’t feel right. His brother Dex finally tells him that he was found abandoned in the woods and that the … Continue reading

Honey Boohoohoo!

Hoohoohoo… Hear that? The sobs, wails and groans are a result of watching less than five minutes of TLC’s train wreck of a reality TV series, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” And by train wreck, I mean hit show, ratings Goliath, and sad reflection of society’s taste in entertainment. Millions of viewers tune in each week to mock the parenting skills–or lack thereof–displayed on the show which stars 7-year-old Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson and her eclectic family: *June “Mama” Shannon, the 32-year-old mother of Honey Boo Boo and her three sisters. She’s also the GRANDMOTHER of baby Kaitlyn. Did … Continue reading

Summer Camp Quandary

How young is too young for sleepaway camp? For parents, not kids. I’m convinced that I could hit the big 8-0 and still worry about my kid being away from home. And by home, I mean me. Because hi, I am THAT Mom. Allow my baby to attend summer sleepaway camp? Never. Actually, I’ll probably give in when she turns 30… I mean 10. That’s considered the “age of reason” for most sleepaway camps in our neck of the woods. However, on the East Coast there are many summer camps that allow kids as young as 6 years old to … Continue reading

Mouth-to-Mouth Feeding

By now most of you have seen celebrity mama Alicia Silverstone puking her lunch into her 10-month-old son’s mouth. If you’ve been spared from the trauma thus far, but want to join the masses, you can watch the video here. Apparently, this revolting practice has an actual name: premastication or pre-chewing. According to CBS News via Wikipedia, “Pre-chewing food lubricates it for better infant digestion, and also passes on disease-fighting immunities in the mother’s saliva. However, pre-chewing food also puts baby at risk for any diseases the mother might have, as well.” Upon viewing the actress’ feeding technique many mommy … Continue reading
