Are Credit Cards Tools or Traps?

by Miriam Caldwell | More from this Blogger

Many view credit cards as useful tools. They can help you get something that you want now, that you do not have the money for. Others view them as a way to get cash back, or earn points for prizes, vacations and flights. It is important to realize that with the convenience that credit cards offer, also cards are also dangerous.

It is important to avoid charging your wants on your credit card. If you are paying for your wants with cash at the beginning of the month, but charging your groceries at the end, then you are still charging your wants on you card. It is important to realize that your cards should not be a way around following your budget.

If you are using your cards to earn rewards, then you need to make sure that you are still following your budget. This will prevent you from overspending. Additionally you should pay off your balance in full every month.

If you do not have the discipline to stick to your budget or to pay off your balance each month, then credit cards are not for you. Be particularly careful of the number of cards you accumulate. You do not need a credit card at every store you shop at. The ten percent discount that you may save on your purchase is quickly added back onto your purchase in the interest charges that you are paying.

Credit cards can provide services and rewards that you may not get otherwise. If you use cards for this reason you need to be disciplined and pay off your balance in full each month. If you cannot do this, then you shouldn't have the card. Also you really do not need more than one credit card. You should be able to handle your emergencies with just one card.
